Wizard Fingers is a work in progress. It consists of a pneumatic drum set, a bar chime set, and soon an electro-mechanical air organ. The software that runs the system uses Markov chains for a stylistic creative seed and a yet-undetermined AI algorithm to make aesthetic descisions about the music created by the system. Wizard Fingers is designed to be an autonomous improvisational music system. The end result is a system with many potential performance options. In collaborating with Hiroki Nishino Wizard Fingers has been used in conjunction with live dancers. The dancers improvise their dance, and using custom RFID hardware and software designed and built by Hiroki, the movements of the dancers and indeed their very interactions have been used as control signals to improvise with the system... Rachael's Descent is a video piece about family as an uncontrolled chain reaction. It is directly related to my own family history and open to any interpretation. I don't care if you understand any of it. It is just beautiful. Hear the cicada... A Man In Static is a video piece about a man who is psychologically unravelling. It is ambiguously a document of his testimony of a severe event or some portrayal of his disturbed mental space. recharger is a composite video animation involving dramatic camera motion, 2D stills and video footage arranged in a 3D space. I utilized After Effects to create a "paper-cut-out" set of images and video events, then created a camera to navigate the space. It is a visual reflection of my interpretation of the myth of The Tower of Babel as described in Genesis. Child Mask is a four part series of 2D design work utilizing imagery of children's masks that were found on Google. I did this series as sketches for large scale paintings that have not yet been made. Here also is work from DXARTS_201 and DXARTS_200: Pack Rat is a labyrinthine web site made of imagery captured from the trash heaps of the internet. The collected "junk" was reprocessed and combined in nonsensical contexts to create an aesthetically interesting arrangement of "found" objects. The imagery is redesigned and intermixed with original video "haikus" in the form of gif animations. The overall style is a chaotic degradation of obscure imagery. Rubber Mallet is a sound art piece recorded straight to minidisc and edited solely on a minidisc recorder. This piece was recorded around the neighborhood that I live in and features the wonderful sounds of the many trains that are always around me there. It also features many large objects being struck vigorously with a rubber mallet. It revels in the beautiful sounds of industry and the volume and tone achieved from massive metal objects. Surgery is a video that reuses stock educational footage. The music was composed entirely with samples from the stock film. It was meticulously crafted to create a "pop" music feel with a decent amount of discomfort injected. The video was then edited to complement the music. Autonomous Creative Agents: a work 50 years distant This is a webpage explaining a visionary work that, technologically, is likely more than 50 years away from being possible in a the real, true sense of the project. It is true that what is described could be faked with current technology. However, it is currently not possible to attain the purest goals of the project. Yet, I am commited to making this possible when technology catches up to this vision. I hope you enjoy the works and are able to find beauty, discomfort, and a sense of humor in what you witness. Sincere thanks, Eric Thompson. |
